Animal Alphabets

Geez it's been a long time since I updated my blog... sorry! I've been busy this Summer with many things but I have started working on a new series of Animal Alphabets pastels. They are only available as art blocks and I think of them as an elegant alternative to the typical nursery decoration. They make great gifts for newborn or toddlers. You can see all the currently available letters at my Etsy store. I'm about half way done with the alphabet... Let me know what you think!

Drawing of Girl with Neurowear Cat Ears

I loved the video of the Neurowear cat ears that I posted about a few days ago so much that i decided to make a drawing about it. My favorite part of that video is when the girl sees the guy on the street and her ears perk up, but the guy doesn't notice her. I don't know how a guy can miss a girl with huge cat ears. Maybe it's just too common in Japan.

Drawing a Duckling Pastel

So I made a new pastel drawing of a duckling and I made pictures along the way to show how my drawing is made. You can find the final artwork for sale at my Etsy or ArtFire store.

1. I picked out the colors I will use for my drawing and my initial sketch is made in what would be the medium color, in this case, a strong yellow.

2. Next, I shaded in the shadows of the duck and the duck bill.

3. I typically use 2-3 colors to create a rich background. In this case, I used a teal, medium green, and a pale green, each overlapping slightly to create a gentle fade. I also use the background colors to darken the shadows of the duck's body to make the duck more of a part of the environment. I decided to make the duck's eyes teal as well because I loved the color so much. I was kind of messy and you can see some green fingerprints on the body of the duck :P

4. Lastly, I put in the highlight colors. I used a white on the duck bill to blend and create a smooth looking bill. I used a very light cream color for the duck, adding marks along the edges of body to create a "fuzziness" effect. I also added some pale green to the eyes to give it a more liquid look.

Lots and Lots of Bunny Rabbits

In the last few days I made a lot of pastels of bunnies. I tried to create a beautiful light with the fur of each bunny and chose a different time of day with each artwork.

Banjo and Mogwai

Two more pastels inspired by super cute puppies. Banjo is an extremely fluffy Keeshond and Mogwai is an Alaskan Klee Kai, a miniature breed of the Siberian Husky.

Clea and Kate

So I made a couple more pastels. The first one is a Miniature Schnauzer named "Clea" where I used royal blue for the shadows and a bright pink background. I love schnauzers' fuzzy faces! The second one is Kate from "Just Another Dog Blog", showing off her enormous tongue! You should definitely check out her blog, really great photographs of her and her buddies and the writing is quite humorous.

Puppies in Pastels

So I decided to try my hand at doing portraits in pastel instead of watercolor. I went with straight forward portraits of puppies instead of dressed in costumes to get my feet wet. I think they're very cute!
